Why Can't AI Find My Website Content?

Why Can't AI Find My Website Content?

If you've ever asked ChatGPT or Perplexity about your own industry and noticed your website is nowhere in the answer, you're not alone, and you're definitely not imagining it. I run Llamacorp, and I've actually gone through this exact problem with our own site. Here's what's really going on, based on what we found and fixed firsthand.

The first thing to check: how your site is built

The very first thing we check when a client asks why AI isn't finding them is whether the site relies heavily on client side JavaScript rendering instead of server side rendering. Here's why that matters. AI crawlers move fast and don't wait around for a heavy JavaScript site to fully load in a browser the way a human visitor would. If the content technically exists but takes too long to render, AI tools often just skip past it and move to the next site.

Case study: our own website

We learned this the hard way with Llamacorp's own site. When we first launched, it was a heavily JavaScript rendered build on Vite, and we could not figure out why we weren't getting picked up by AI tools or indexing properly. After weeks of digging, we realized the rendering approach itself was the problem. We migrated the codebase over to Next.js and shifted more of the content toward straightforward, readable HTML that doesn't need to wait on client side JavaScript to become visible. Google Search Console started crawling and indexing our pages within days of that change. Actual AI search visibility took longer, closer to one to four days before we saw any movement, and real traction only came once we paired that fix with content actually built around what people search for.

It's not just the technical fix

Here's the part that surprised us. Fixing the rendering issue alone did not suddenly make us visible everywhere. AI tools also weigh backlinks and citations heavily. If your site does not have other credible sites pointing to it, or you're relatively new, AI tools tend to default to recommending established big brands with strong SEO and backlink profiles instead. We're actively working on this ourselves right now through guest posting to build up genuine backlinks.

Case study: the backlink gap

We had a client whose website had actually been live for three to four years, but it still wasn't showing up in AI recommendations. When we compared their backlink profile against competitors, the gap was significant, despite them being established for years. We recommended they prioritize backlink building and guest posting on already trusted, established sites, since that borrowed credibility is something AI systems clearly weight heavily when deciding who to recommend.

What actually makes content AI friendly

AI tools are increasingly good at detecting generic AI generated text, and they tend to deprioritize it. What works better is content written to directly answer the actual questions your niche audience is asking, structured almost like an FAQ, and written in a genuinely human voice. Research what people in your market are actually searching for day to day, then write real answers to those specific questions rather than generic marketing copy.

A note on schema markup

I'll be upfront here, this is an area I believe matters based on general SEO principles, but I haven't personally tested it in depth with a client yet. Structured data likely helps AI systems understand your content more precisely, but I don't have firsthand results to back that claim fully yet, and I think it's worth being honest about that rather than overselling it.

Where Llamacorp stands right now

Right now, our own site is only really showing up in AI searches related to fairly narrow queries around AI and website design. We're about six to eight months into building out our SEO seriously, and realistically expect it will take around ten to eleven months more before we see visibility broaden meaningfully across more search terms. This is not an overnight fix.

Mistakes worth avoiding

If I were starting over, there are three things I'd prioritize immediately instead of learning them the hard way. Fix the SSR and rendering setup from day one. Take backlinks seriously early rather than treating them as an afterthought. And never just paste raw AI chatbot output onto your site as your content. Google's detection of AI generated content is sharper than ever, and it will not help you build the kind of credibility that shows real customers, and AI systems, that you actually understand your market.

What's coming next

Over the next year or two, I think this shift is going to hit local and small businesses the hardest. People are increasingly skipping Google entirely and asking ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini directly for recommendations, and those tools tend to surface a shortlist of the most relevant, credible businesses rather than a long scrollable list. We're still early in this shift, and businesses that ignore it now are going to find it much harder to catch up later.
